At Troyer’s Seamless Rain Gutters, we focus on installing high-quality rain gutters that protect your home in North Idaho and Eastern Washington. However, rain gutters are only one aspect of how your home receives and diverts water.

The intense winters in North Idaho and the build up of ice and snow can cause major issues for your roof and rain gutter system. It’s not just the snow and the ice that causes damage; it’s also the gallons of water flowing when everything frozen begins to melt.

Here are 3 ways to prevent ice and water from damaging your home this winter:

Check the insulation in your attic or directly below your roof to ensure your home isn’t excessively losing heat.

If heat can escape your house it can melt ice on your roof before the gutters have a chance to thaw, which may cause the formation of ice damming and icicles. When this happens, the snow on your roof goes through a cycle of melting, refreezing, and melting again. This could cause water to leak through your ceiling. Additionally, large icicles and inches of ice are heavy, and you don't want them resting on your gutters. Proper Insulation in your home, especially directly below your roof, will help seal the heat and ensure melting ice flows properly through your rain gutter system and away from your home.

Consider removing snow from your roof that has been accumulating from the last 3-5 feet of your roof line.

Roof rakes work well for this. It will pull and push snow off of your roof without causing any damage to your roof, or your rain gutters. We also install snow stops, which help to protect your roof from extreme snow and freezing.

Consider Installing Heat Cables

Heat cables can be highly effective in preventing heavy ice buildup. However, heat cables will not fix the root of the issue if you don’t have proper insulation and you’re experiencing too much melting and refreezing. Heat cables should be a last option if those issues have already been addressed. However, heat cables using heat cables can be a great option in addition to raking your roof and insuring proper insulation.
